Staredit Network -> Concepts -> Are we near the limit of mapping?
Report, edit, etc...Posted by smasher25 on 2006-09-25 at 00:35:53
I've been wondering with thousands of attempts at new concepts of map-making and new types of gameplay are we at our limit? Can we spawn a new type of game, other than defense, bloods(yes including games like Family guy, and Super Smash bros), bounds, rpgs, and stuff like that?

Even if we do will it be worthwhile playing? How long will it take to get to the limit?

When we do Blizzard will surely have to release SC2

i doubt another can be created. starcraft gaming has matured enough to have covered every genre. any 'new' ones will simply be a combination of pre-existing ones. Just about the only one we don't have is MMORPG. which is simply impossible + impractical. no one would play a map forever and no one would want to make a map to be played forever. not literally forever, but you get the point.

concerning new mapmaking concepts, i think the practical limit has already been reached. sure, there are special 'niches' that are still 'undiscovered,' but they're being discovered for making a fun map, they're just discovered for the sake of being discovered. Even at that, i think individuals are running out of gas. the way i see it, the only new major concepts would come from team efforts. still, it'd probly be done less for fun and more for showing it could be done.

wow that's attainable?

i jsut said it wasn't attainable

yeah its not possible cause you cant make a trigger system that is endless you can make a looping one but not endless

Endless?

Heh, you should see some concept maps I've started lately. You're dead wrong if you think there's nothing left to be covered. wink.gif

I second Tuxedo's statement.

Yeah, ever since iv seen some of the things recently figured out by some of the great mappers like bonlesskid and lethal, theres lots more to be covered it seems to me.

Pssh it wont end. Even if it does people can make a map about every trigger then put it in all categorys for example.

Always defence then Always RPG and always battle

Well, it's just becoming hard to make new types of maps, but it's harder to make a map people don't instantly criticize until it has been buried and forgotten.

Man I'd like to know how you pro map makers make those triggers, I'm ok at everything at mapping except for triggers. lol perhaps one of you would tell me or teach me biggrin.gif

Just understand what each action and condition do, variables, and trigger order and it helps a lot.

yesss but when your triggers go around in circles or dont work its really annoying disgust.gif

Just because you have managed to cover every possible genre in mapping doesn't mean you can't create new and fun maps.

Spell Defense is anything but original, but, albeit being my map, I find it extremely fun to play.

I would have to agree wholeheartedly with Tux, there is plenty more that can be done. More complex triggers are not required, just more complex trigger systems. I believe the real question is will better things be done, and is interest in Starcraft dying too quickly for it to matter? Although the possibilities are being uncovered, more complex systems require more and more effort, and very few people are willing to put forth that amount of effort. We seem to see ambitious new map threads every day, but not many maps actually being finished. Do not think of this as criticism of people who abandon a map, it has always been that very few concepts see it through to the final vision, it is part of mapping to drop ideas often. However it seems that almost nothing gets done nowadays.

There are many different types of maps nobodies really tried. The only limit in map making is when you say there is one.

Some games that I've kinda worked on, although am not really working on them currently, might pick them back up later.
A worms type map, where you shoot each other on a flat screen.
A side scrolling shoot 'em up game.
A music creation game.
A business game. (Where you buy stocks from other players and extend your company across a city in key locations to gain wealth and put other companies out of business. I guess its kinda territory/defence/something else)
And a bunch of stupid minigames.

And yes you can make an endless rpg. (All I'd have to do is add a random switch to one map I'm working on currently. I could make two actually, but the other map would need some more triggers to it.) But who would really want to play one map forever?

exactly, new concepts require too much effort and skill and are just not practical for the average map maker to create. so many concepts have already been created, that for all your creativity, chances are someone has already thought of it. if not, it would be so complex or otherwise difficult to make that it won't get done. unless you're an extremely talented and dedicated mapper, you're probly gonna need to be a part of a team in order to see the concept released. hence, why i believe the best new concepts will be a result of mappers conjoining their efforts and working together.

Well, we havent completely mapped SC's memory, therefore, no.

Something doesn't need to be complex to be something nobodies thought of. In fact, with so many people thiinking that the complex things are the only things left to discover, the simple things can turn out easier to think of.

Simple, fun, and unique maps can be hard to make since people can get really critical.

Actually, I did try a music creation game once. But I doubt I'll finish it.

Man I wish I was more than one person right now...
